Fortunately no one was liit, but the incident caused a sensation. The culprit was promptly arrested, other stones being found on him. Bkisisaxk, This day. Five hundred men have been discharged from the Meat Export Company's works through the scarcity of fat cattle caused by the tick plague. Mkluouhnk, This day. Fuc-ile lias been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. lV.p.Tii, This day. An independent party, under the leadership of Mr Paiker, has been formed in the Legislative Assembly to exercise the functions of the Opposition. The bricklayers' trouble is increasing. Several masters have conceded to the demand, but the Guilders and Contractors Association have resolved that no increase or reduction is to be made without three months' notice. Thi"ksi>ay Island, This day. The barquentine Day spring has been totally wrecked on the north-east reef in Torres Stre.it. It is expected that the cargo and fittings will be saved.
