Hastings Wesleyan Church.

QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly business meeting of the Hastings Wesley an Church was held last evening in the vestry. All the officials were present. Be v. Dr. Hosking presided. The income and expenditure for the quarter nearly balanced. The present minister was unanimously invited to remain another year in charge of the church. The following resolution from the Conference was read and endorsed : " That inasmuch as the conference of our church, both general and annual, have repeatedly condemned intemperance as one of the most terrible evils that exists, and inasmuch as it is now proved beyond a doubt that as long as the liquor traffic exists intemperance will continue to be a scourge to the human race, this conference heartily rejoices in the facilities furnished by recent legislation in this colony, whereby the power of the people to prohibit the liquor traffic has been greatly enlarged. The conference urges it as a solemn duty upon the members and adherents of our church, in view of the awful devastation wrought by strong drink, to avail themselves of their rights as Christian citizens at the forthcoming local option poll, and to vote the liquor traffic right out of existence." It was explained that three proposals will be submitted to the electors. 1. I vote that the number of licenses in the district continue. 2. I vote that the number of licenses in the district be reduced. 8. I vote that no licenses be granted in the district. All members and adherents are urged to strike out the first of these proposals, thus casting their votes for reduction and prohibition. It was earnestly desired that all the age of twenty one years see that their names are enrolled in the electoral roll of the Hawke's Bay district. It was decided to hold a congregational meeting in October to arrange for a sale of work to be held shortly before Christmas to wipe the debt off the furniture at the parsonage, and to hold the next meeting at the residence of Mr Tennet, Clive. A vote of thanks was ordered to be conveyed to Miss J. Jeffries, of Clive, for her gratuitous services as organist at the Clive Church. Mr Bissel kindly offered to conduct lantern mission services during the coming quarter at Hastings, Clive, and Havelock. It was understood that the Rev. Dr. Hosking will attend the Synod to be held in Wellington in November. The Sunday school anniversary was fixed for the beginning of December, and Temperance sermons were ordered to be preached throughout the district on the Sunday before the local option poll was taken. The meeting, which was very hearty and harmonious, was closed with benediction by the chairman.
