At a meeting of the Auckland branch of the Navy League the question of celebrating on October 21st the anniversary of the battle of Trafagar was considered, and it was decided to invite the shipping companies and owners of shipping in the port to display bunting on anniversary day, and also to request those in charge of both public and private buildings to make similar displays. Recent prosecutions of bicyclists, and heavy fines inflicted, have had the effect of stirring up 'cyclists* at Auckland to the neccessity of taking some practical steps to assert their rights. As a first move in this direction, a petition has been prepared and copies circulated in town and suburbs for signature and the name subscribed will b# confined to 'cyclists, of whom it is estimated there are some 600 or 700 in the city and suburbs. There is some talk of convening a public meeting of 'cyclists, with a view to taking united action to protect the interest of wheelmen generally.. At Riverton yesterday Mrs Taylor, confectioner, was charged with selling alcoholic liquor without a license. The police moved in the matter through a witness in a recent inquest stating that plum wine purchased from Mrs Taylor affected him. The Goverment analyst certified that the wine contained two and a half times more alcohol than Dunedin ale. Mrs Taylor explained that it had been guaranteed by Mr Stokes, of Christchurch, the maker, to contain only fruit juice, water, and sugar, and on that assurance she vended it. The police not asking for a heavy penalty, S.M. Poynton ordered defendant to pay costs, £2 15s. An amusing incident of the affair is that a parson of strong temperance proclivities, having the excellence of the plum wine brought under his notice by a teetotal friend, is said *to have gratified his palate by purchasing the whole stock, well pleased to have discovered a really good non-intoxicat-ing wine.
