NAPIER NOTES.

+ —. [From Our Own Correspondent.] Napier, September 25. The Pirates won the senior football championship, Olive the junior and the West End Club the third cup. The captain of the Ringdove has sent a complimentary reference to the F Battery for the way in which the cavalry sword squad acquitted themselves in the recent Assault-at-Arms. Margaret Manly, who probably knows more about Police Court business than most women, appeared yesterday to answer a charge of vagrancy, and Mr Blyth, J.P., gave her accommodation in the cells for one week. A batch of prisoners for the Napier gaol arrived from Gisborne by the Anglian yesterday. Mr Hill, the Inspector of schools, left on an extended examination tour Norch last night. He will proceed to Wairoa, and thence go through the Poverty Bay district. The Half Holiday Association is to be resuscitated in Napier. The debate between Rev. Hosting and Mr Sutton last night was only fairly well attended, and proved on the whole a very "dry" affair, many people leaving long before the discussion was over. As far as the merits of the affair went —if there Jwere any merits—it was hard to say who had the best of it. Neither of the speeches were very convincing. Dr. Hosking contended for an hour that "wine " as translated in the bible had a number of different meanings in the Hebrew. Mr Sutton didn't cape whether they did or not he didn't know anything about Hebrew, his bible was good enough for him, and so oil, The Synod wound up its meetings , last night but no business of importance i was transacted.
