The case against Kenny, of cutting off O'Gorinan's ears began at Pahiatua on Saturday. Mr -Jellieoe appeared for the defence. O'Gorman said he laid down drunk, and awakened by a pain at his ears, and on looking up said he was Kenny standing over him cutting or pulling at his ear. He said " Kenny, you have killed me," and Kenny ran away. An old resident of Gladstone, near Carterton, named Thomas Howe, was pinned to the ground by a falling tree. After some time he managed to wriggle out, and crawled a distance of 10 chains to his house, getting over a four railed fence. One of his legs was completely shattered, the thigh bone and foot bones being fractured and protruding through the flesh. He never got over the shock, and died last night. He was upwards of 60 yeacs old and a single man.

Messrs A. Gray and W. R. Haselden, both members of the Wellington Bar, are mentioned as successors to S.M. Martin. The former has been ofl'ered the position and refused, but was asked to reconsider his determination. The Wirokino Road Board office, also used as a Courthouse, was burned on Saturday morning, all the records being destroyed. An examination of the human remains found near Mandcville shows a fracture of the skull and two ribs broken, but whether this was done before or after death is not explained There is no evidence as yet to identity, but it is reported that inquiries were made some months ago as to the whereabouts of an eccentric man who was missing. Mr J. J. Holland is out for Auckland City in the Liberal interest. Alfred E. L. Hailes, charged at Dunedin with deserting from H.M.S. Rapid, was remanded till something more definite is heard of the war vessel.
