By the upsetting of a lamp in a tent at Cockburn, three little children named Roots were burned to death. The steamer Framnes, bound to Western Australia, encountered a heavy gale and her shaft broke. Twenty-five of forty-eight horses aboard were killed and several others fatally injured.
