PROTECTION v. FREETRADE.
THE LABOR LEADER WANTS A PLEBISCITE TAKEN. Sydney, August 26. In the Assembly, a resolution was moved by Mr McGowan, leader of the Labor party, that with a view to ending the commercial and financial unrest, a plebiscite be taken upon the advisability of the present policy remaining in operation for five years, and in the event of a majority declaring in favor of a protective tariff, that immediate action be taken to adjust the fiscal policy in accordance with the wishes of the majority. The Premier said he was prepared to meet the people at any time, but would not agree to do this at once. Provided that the vote was taken at the next general election he would vote for the motion, which, when amended, would read that the vote be taken at the first suitable opportunity, and that such protective policy remain in force five years. In this form the motion was carried by 48 to 21, the Ministers supporting it.
