GENERAL ITEMS. Sydney. August IH. Four nioro boxes of gold were saved from the Cattenhun to-day. At the annual meeting of the -Tookey Club the report expressed satisfaction at the efforts of Victoria to restrict the early running of the two-year-olds, and recommended that it is desirable the leading clubs should should act unitedly in the matter. If the movement proves successful the club will take an early opportunity to try and follow in the same direction. The rules were altered fixing the highest weight in any handicap flat- race at not less than 9st 51b, and the lowest in hurdles and steeplechases at not less than 9st. August 19.
The Governor will visit Norfolk Island either in November or December to instal Colonel Spalding as administrator. The Premier states that the island will not be made an integral part of the* colony, but probably the Imperial Parliament will legislate or by Order in Council initiate a simple code giving the Islanders the freest voice in the management of their own affairs. The English and Scottish Bank will release the sum of £3-50,000, being the first and second instalments of terminable deposits. Payment will be made on the sth September.
