A Gambling Raid.

A SCOBE ARRESTED

[Special to Standard.] Chwstchcrch, This Day. About 10 o'clock last night a lrage body of police made a raid on an alleged gambling house over a lash shop in Cashel street. An alarm was given at the foot of the stairs when the police arrived and the lights were turned down and the doors were rushed, but the police prevented their attempt to escape. Some 20 men were found on the premises and on the floor a box and some 40 dice. The occupiers of the premises and some 18 others were handcuffed and taken to the police station. At the Magistrate's Court to-day two of the proprietors were charged with being the keepers of a common gaining house, and the remaining 19 with

being found in a gaming house without excuse. The majority were young men under 30 years of age, » some of them being residents in Chri tchurch and some visitors from Wellington, Napier, and Dunedin, for ihe races. Accused were brought before the Court this morning. McWilliam, the proprietor of the shop, was fined £25, and the others £2 each. On the floor of the room where the gamblers were three bank notes on an extinct Melbourne Bank were found, bat were not traced to any particular individual. m One of the men, Frank Burrows, was charged with attempting to pass bank notes similar to those found in the room on a Sydenham tradesman in exchange for "goods, and was repanded.
