In the Australians' innings Hearne took six wickets for 41 runs, Peel two for 30, Richardson none for 21, and Hayward none for*l7. When the stumps were drawn for the day the Englishmen had lost five wickets for 60 runs. CO In the first innings of the Englishmen, Jackson was smartly taken with a one-handed catch by M'Kibbin at mid-wicket. McLaren commenced by forcing the game, but a change of bowling had the desired effect, Trumble bowling him off his thigh. Wynyard was caught by Darling off a fine drive over the bowler's head. Abel played a patient game, and was dismissed by a grand one. - handed catch, while Lilley was secured by Iredale in the long-field. The fielding of the colonials was brilliant.
Darling and Iredale began by playing the bowling with great freedom, Richardson being' hit about freely. Iredale lost his wicket by attempting a fifth run off a bit by Darling, and the latter was dismissed by a smart catch at cover-slip. Hill lost a wicket in attempting a second run, while Giffen stayed.at the wickets for half an hour without scoring. Kelly was at the wickets for an hour, carrying out his bat for 10 runs. The other members were completely beaten by the bowling. The fielding of the Home team was perfect, while the bowling of Hearne was at times unplayable. In the second innings of the Eng- 4 lishmen, Trumble and M'Kibbin commenced the bowling, and disposed of the three first wickets for 28 runs. Abel and McLaren then made a stand, and it was not till a change of bowling was made that a separation was made. Giffen disposed of Abel by a one-hand catch. It was a bowlers' wicket all day. There were 23,367 people paid for admission. The Hon Joseph Chamberlain entertained both teams at lunch. London, August 12. The attendance was very large, and the weather fine to-day. The wicket was much cut up and played worse than ever, never having recovered from Monday's soaking. England—2nd Innings (continued).
