The Rev. J. Milne, Presbyterian minister of Chalmers Church, Sydney, has accepted a call to Oaroaru. A sculling match has been arranged between Towns, a Newcastle man, and Chris Neilson for £2OO aside. The race will be rowed on the Hunter river, and it is understood that if Towns wins he will be matched to row Stanbury. August 12. The annual conference of the Farmers and Settlers' Association carried a resolution approving of the Government policy of promoting closer settlement, but'affirming that the time was premature for its wholesale application. Melbourne. August 11. The miners at Coal Creek mine contemplate striking to resist a reduction in the hewing rate, and are petitioning Parliament to impose an import duty of two shillings and sixpence per ton on coal.
