GENERAL ITEMS. Sydney, August 11. The Board of Exports has shipped 1800 cases of oranges by the Ophir, for the purpose of testing the English markets in the interests of the growers of fruit of a second grade quality. There is ample local market for all first grade fruit. The oranges are packed in ground pumice, from New Zealand. Melbourne, August 10. A cable from America states that Parsons, the Victorian cyclist, has lowered the world's record for a mile at Chicago. The time is not given. August 11. A ballot of the Y.R.C. has decided by a large majority that no two-year-olds shall be allowed to start in any race before October Ist, and that no race shall be shorter than four furlongs. Brisbane, August 11. A fire at Herberton destroyed two hotels and three shops. Adelaide, August 11. The persistent rumors that the Duke of York would shortly pay a visit to Australia have been set at rest by the London correspondent of the South Australian Register, who denied their accuracy on information obtained direct from York House, Sandringham.
