THE ISLAND IN A TERRIBLE STATE. Athens, August 6. Moslems, to the number of 500, have taken refuge in their mosques in Crete, and many are said to be in a state of starvation. A raid on the Christians is feared, as 5,000 Moslems have surrounded the Herakleion Gate, and the Governor, in endeavoring to pacify them was dragged from his horse and severely maltreated. Vienna, August 6. Austria desires that in making provision for the control of Crete it ahall apply equally to Turks and Cretans.
