NEWS FROM THE EAST.
RUMORS OF REBELLION. ATTACKS ON MISSIONARIES. Sydney, August 6. News by steamer from China states that rumors of rebellion come from all parts of the Empire. The Matohes aboriginal savages have risen in Nyechuen and committed a number of outrages, and it is believed they will form a junction with Mahommedans, who are at present marching in a south-west direction. Kansu, ever since the war with the Chinese, has been in" a state of ferment. as the people are dissatisfied with the governors and the rulers of the country. The position on the borders of Shantung and Kansu are very serious. The natives have risen against the Mandarins, and several villages have been captured and the inhabitants butchered. During the rising in Formosa against the Japs, Ollis, a well-known Hong Kong merchant, was killed. The anti-foreign movement is again very pronounced, and is bringing about a renewal of outrages on the missionaries. One lady has been abducted from one of the stations. Many French missions have been destroyed, the people being scattered about, and two were killed.
