[By Telegraph.] [Special to Standard.] Wellington, This day. Dr Gowan, surgeon of the steamship Maori, died during the voyage from London, and was buried at sea. By his will, the late Mr Charles R. Carter, after whom the town of Carterton was named, left, in addition to a valuable library, property to the value of £IO,OOO for the erection and maintenance of a home for the aged poor and needy. Drunkards and bankrupts are not eligible as candidates for admission to the home. Wellington city itself benefits to the extent of an astronomical observatory to be fitted with all modern applicanc-es. Borne £'s and £'lo notes on the defunct Melbourne Bank are in circulation here. They were never properly issued, as they are not signed, but several tradesmen have been victimised.
