SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
THE CHARTERED COMPANY. COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY TO BE SET UP. London, July 31. Mr Chamberlain in the House of Commons moved for the establishment of a committee to inquire into the working of the British South Africa Chartered Company, and report as to alterations desirable in the government of its territory. His motion embodied Sir William Harcourt's amendment that the committee should also inquire into the origin of the circumstances which led to the invasion of the Transvaal by an armed force. The motion was adopted unanimously. Mr Chamberlain states that the officers operating in Rhodesia are endeavoring to increase the food supply for the forces, and if possible the regulations with respect to the rinderpest are to be relaxed, and camels employed in transport. C'ape Town, August 1. It has been decided to declare the Matoppo hills a rebel area. The building of forts is being pushed on, so as to prevent the natives sowing crops or feeding their herds, which will of course, compel them in the end to submit. It is proposed to recruit 600 men in England and the Cape to strengthen the mounted police.
