THE COAL MINE TROUBLE ENDED. THE AMATEUR DEFINITION. S.A. IMITATING NEW ZEALAND. Sydney, July IS. The ballot by the miners' lodges reultecl in 974 voting for and 845 against the acceptance of the proposals of the mine owners. The strike will now be officially declared at an end. The Rowing Association has decided on a definition of an amateur oarsman. At a meeting held to consider the definition of the conference held lately, an amendment was carried that New Zealand amateur oarsmen who conform to the conference definition (with the exception that they compete for money prizes, which are paid to their respective clubs) be eligible to as amateurs in intercolonial rowing. Adelaide, July 15. In thg Legislative Assembly the Attorney-General said he was watch- ! ing with interest the experiment in New Zealand of the establishment of State pawnskops, and if it turned out I satisfactorily he would introduce a ! similar measure.
