THE SANGSTER BOARD.
THE FINDING OF THE COMMISSION. THE CHARGES DECLARED TO BE UNPROVED. Melbourne, July 9. The Board set up at the instance of Mr Sangster, M.L.C., to inquire into the charges made of officials permitting unseaworthy vessels to proceed to sea has reported, despite the evidence given as to the rotten condition of the steamer Wendouree, that the charges are unproved, and say it is not satisfied that the steamer was unseaworthy. The Board further shifts responsibility of the state of the matter on to the shoulders of seamen, whom it says were actuated by ill-feeling towards officers, not by any desire for the well-being of those concerned. The Board finds the charge that an official was discharged because he would not report favorably of rotten ships is false. It is admitted, however, that the standard comfort for seamen is not maintained. A more glaring piece of disregard for safety of lives of sailors and passengers was never before shown by a Board of Enquiry.
