Presentation to Mr Seddon.
A BIG GATHERING. [By Telegraph.j ( P'rci/i our Special Wellington, This Day. The Skating Rink was. crowded to excess last evening on the occasion of the celebration of the Premier's 51st birthday. It is estimated that there were close upon P.OOO present. Congratulations were received from all parts of the colony. The Hon. James Bonar, M.L.C., presented Mr Seddon with the handsome address mentioned in a previous wire ; and Mrs T. Kennedy M'Donald, on behalf of the ladies of New Zealand, presented Mrs Seddon with a costly diamond and poarl necklace. Mrs'" Seddon suitably replied, and was warmly cheered. The Fremier, in returning thanks for the great honor done him, related bis personal experience since entering the political arena, and stated that it was a wire received from Sir George Grey on the death of Mr Ballance that decided him to take up the Premiership. He claimed sympathy for Mr Ward, who he said had been mined financially by his devotion to the affairs of the colony. The proceedings were intensely enthusiastic, and prolonged cheers were given at the conclusion for Mr and Mrs Seddon and family.
