A MARINE CATASTROPHE.
THE DRUMMOND CASTLE RUNS INTO AN ISLAND. AND FOUNDERS IN THREE MINUTES. TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE. ONLY ONE SURVIVOR. London, June 17. A terrible marine accident lias occurred near the island of Ushant, off the coast of France. The steamer Drummond Castle, of Donald Currie and Co.'s Cape mail line, struck a small island at midnight on Tuesday. The impact was terrific, and the steamer filled and sank in three minutes after striking. The vessel carried 148 passengers, and the officers and crew numbered 102. Up to the present thero is only one survivor, but there are hopes that some may be picked up in the ship's boats. A British cruiser witnessed the terrible disaster, but owing to the suddenness with which the ship foundered was unable to render any assistance.
