NAPIER NOTES.

[FKMM OCK OWN Coukkspondkxt.] Napier, This Day. A sad fatal accident happened on the breakwater contract just previous to knocking-otf time last evening It appears that a man named George Edwards, a recent arrival from Wellington, was working on the face, and while engaged in levering a big block of stout! he felt his footway give, and ran down the hill. The big rock at which hi' was working became disengaged and rolled down the face after him with tremendous force, and before the poor fellow could get clear he was struck on the back, lie managed to rise, but it was plainly seen that lie was injured beyond human aid. A doctor was telephoned for, :\nd the poor fellow was put- on a conveyance to be taken to the hospital, but before reaching then- he expired. Deceased leaves a wife and family in Wellington.

The Junior Club classes are now in full swing and it may be considered fairly started upon its eaiver of fostering and maintaining the intellect of our young men. An institute like the Napier Junior Club does more in the glorious cause of temperance than all the I.O.G.T's. in New Zealand. A large proportion of our young men are strangers to the town and having no home in which to spend their evenings are offered the attractions and fellowship of home by the (l ib, be i les providing them with every opportunity of improving their minds. There is one fault, however, and it is that ladies are not admitted to membership on the same footing as men. When this will be the case the Club will be an ideal institution.
