H.B. Licensing Committee.
ANNEAL MEETING. The memb.-rs oi" the :.brj\y Licensiii<. Committee met to-day in the Courl House. Present: Messrs Turnbul' (Chairman), Eitzßoy, Rhodes, Harker Howard, Beilby, McLeod, Whittington. and Thornton.
Before proceeding with the hearing of the applicants Sergeant Mitchell drew the C'oinmitte's attention to a notice he had received from the Police Department with reference to hotel owners providing a moveable ladder in case of fire, such ladder to be always kept 011 the premises. The police report for the hotels within the borough was favourable to encli one and licenses were granted as follows :
Charles Alfred William Hunt-, Stratford Lodge, five sitting-rooms, If) bedrooms ; wooden bouse, iron roof, in good order; well conducted. Ten o'clock.
Henry Oakley Can! ton, Pacific Hotel, six sitting-rooms, l;-i bedrooms ; wooden house, iron roof, in good order ; well conducted. Eleven o'clock.
Thomas Surma n, Hastings Hotel, four sitting-rooms, 22 bedrooms; wooden building, iron roof, in good order; well conducted. Eleven o'clock.
Samuel Charlton, Railway Holed, four sitting-rooms, 11 bedrooms; wooden building, iron roof, in good order : well conducted. Eleven o'clock.
Patrick Gorman, Carlton Club Hotel, seven sitting-rooms, 20 bedrooms ; wooden building, iron roof; in good order ; well conducted. Eleven o'clock.
Frank Webster, Albert Hotel, five sitting-rooms, 19 bedrooms ; wooden buildings, iron roof; recommendations for repairing four bedroom and passage ; well conducted. Eleven o'clock.
Daniel O'Reilly, Exchange llok-1, Havelock, three sitting-rooms and 8 bedrooms ; wooden house, iron roof; inside in good order. Outside requires painting and back spouting requires repairing well conducted. Ten o'clock. Licenses within the county were dealt with as follows:
Mr Ramsay, Fernhill ; Mrs McKay, West Clive; K. Warren, Earndon ; W. Limerick, Empire. Waipawa, ; W. Bennett, Commercial, Waipawa; W. Cheer, Patangata; .Joseph Stowe, Onga Gnga ; D. Mamnev, Exchange, Waipawa ; A. Pickering, TeAute; W. T. Limerick, Imperial, Waipawa.
I>efort> concluding tin- buiness oC the vn "i!!':: Mr Thornton drew the attention of the Committee that it wan quite a common occu ranee for Maori women to l.e providi <1 with liquor. Serjeant Mitchell .said that it was a difficult- matter to prevent Maori women from obtaining drink, as they could secure it hv a white man into an hotel and informing the barman that he was her husband, and thereby envado the Act. Mr Thornton then tabled a motion which was carried ; the substance of which is : That the police of llawke's Bay be instructed to do all that is possible to prevent the sale of liquor to Maori women. The. Committee then adjourned.
