HUNTING DOWN A THIEF.
A " SLIPPERY JACK." Sydxey, May 30. For the past two years the country folk of Capertee have been in a state of terror owing to the depredations of a man who, from the difficulty of capturing him, has earned the sobriquet of " Jack." \ arious schemes were arranged during that period for his capture without success. Diggers' huts were robbed by the man, and sheep stolen from stations in a most daring manner. At the beginning of the week the police, with a black tracker, got ou the track of " Slippery -Jack," and hunted him down. As soon as his pursuers came in sight, Jack made for the scrub, and the police were compelled to fire, and shot the man in the thigh, and then captured him. He turns out to be a Spaniard, and a legacv from Noumea to the mainland, and alleges that he escapcu after being ten days in an open boat. A miscellaneous lot of articles have been recovered from the cave where he resided.
