SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
THE RINDERPEST BECOMING SERIOUS.
TEN MOKE SENTENCES REMITTED. FIGHTING IN BULUWAYO. REBELS DEFEATED. Pertoria, May 25. In his letter to Mr Beit, Mr Lionel Phillips said that few people in the Rand cared a fig about the franchise. The rinderpest is devastating the Transvaal. It has been ascertained that Mr Lionel Phillips, President of the Chamber of Mines, in additional letters, warned Mr Beit, co-director with Mr Cecil Rhodes of the Chartered Company, of the danger of a revolution, and doubted the wisdom of putting their trust in Mr Rhodes. The sentences of imprisonment on ten of the Reformers have been remitted, but no alteration has been made in the amount of the fines. Capetown, May 25. Heavy fighting is reported in the vicinity of Buluwayo, but no particulars are yet to hand. A regiment of infantry and 150 natives were sent to clear the country, and it is supposed that these have encountered a band of rebels. A band of rebels, who attacked a small party at Hope Mountain, were repulsed.
