SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.

A MATABELE RAID

CECIL RHODES' COLUMN

DEMANDS OF A CHIEF JUSTICE

Cape Town, May 19. The Matabele raided a village within six miles of Buluwayo, and secured 100 horses. They then made their escape to the Matoppo hills. Mr Cecil Rhodes' column, which is on its way to Buluwayo, has crossed the Shangani river. In the Legislative Assembly James Xavier Merrimen, a member of the Executive, but not in the Cabinet, admitted that he had received a telegram from the Chief Justice of the Transvaal to the effect that unless the charter of the South African Company was abrogated and Mr Cecil Rhodes punished, there would be a lasting breach between the Transvaal and Cape Colony.
