SPAIN AND AMERICA.

U.S. PREPARING FOR ACTION,

GREAT EXCITEMENT. Washington, May 11. The United States Government has ordered a battalion in Florida to prepare for action, and has sent orders to the navy to assemble in the event of the Spanish Government refusing to give way to President Cleveland's ultimatum that the cases of three men charged with conveying arms to the insurgents, and who were sentenced to death by a court martial, should be tried by a civil tribunal. Intense excitement prevails throughout the country, and it is feared that war will eventuate in the event of the men being executed. Havanah, May 11. General Weyler, the Spanish Com-mander-in-Chief, will resign unless the death sentences are carried out. Madrid, May 11. The impartial opinion in this city is that the United States is seeking to provoke war, and that it would be better to bring matters to a head immediately.
