London, May 11. The Australian cricketers began the opening match of the tour to-day, when they were opposed by an eleven chosen by Lord Sheffield. There was splendid weather, and the attendance numbered about 15,000 people. The Prince of Wales was present to whom 11. Trott. the captain of the visitors, was presented. The wicket was not of the best, being rather lively. Trott having won the toss, Darling and Donnon were the first to go to the wickets. The batsmen played the bowling with ease and confidence, and the spectators witnessed a treat with Darling's vigorous and brilliant criket. Donnan played a lucky innings before lie was bowled by Fry for 88, while Darling put G7 together before he was eventually caught, having given two hot chances previously. His score included eleven fours. The other batsmen continued to increase the score, and had 211 for the loss of five wickets. (iii'i'en played steadily for 88. H. Trott (not out) 43 played well, while Hill (not 30) displayed dashing form. Various bowlers were tried during the day, but were all played freely by the Australians.
