Avcki.axo, May 1. Some human remains h e been found in a hollow rata tree on the Wanganui-Tokatoka road by a settler named Havward. They are believed to be the remains of a deaf and dumb man named Fleming, who lived with the Maoris, and who has been missing for twelve months. The amount in hand by the Mayor for the Rrunnerton Relief Fund is over £ll6O- - Plymouth. May 1. The Auckland Roard commenced an inquiry here this morning into the charges of dummy ism at Awakiuo. Messrs O'llara Smith and C- Skerrett appear for the Land Department. The imjuiry will probably la~t some days. Palmkrstux Nt.in rt. May 1. Thomas Wood, borough rate collector, has been arrested 011 a charge of embezzling £'2oo. moneys of the corporation. He appears at the Police Court to morrow. Mastebtox, May 1. A boy named Rowie, who was accidentally shot with a shot gun at Alfredton, died from the effects of his injuries. Wkujxotox, May 1. It is expected that of 200,000 salmon ova recently imported by the Government 20.000 will be saved at the ponds at Masterton. The consignment was landed in bad condition. Pvxedix, May I. At a meeting of the committee of the Society for the - Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the matter of dehorning cattle was considered. As it appeared to be the opinion of veterinary surgeons that the practice is a very painful one if performed after the horns are grown, and by no means necessary, it was decided to take action against any person exercising such a course. A complaint as to some of the sheep trucks on the railway being too low was referred to the Miniat r for Railways.
