The Napier Carnival in aid of the Brunner Relief Fund yesterday resulted in an unqualified success. Although in the early morning rain fell in torrents, later on the sky cleared and were it not that a bleak wind blew throughout the day there would have been absolutely no cause for complaint. The procession formed opposite the Council Chambers, proceeding thence along the Parade, down White Road, Hastings Sreett, and Emerson Street, to the Recreation Ground. The street Were thronged with people and windows, balconies, and every point of advantage were occupied. The following was the order of the proccession
The Artillery (Captain McCartney), headed by the Garrison Band, followed by Naval, Cadets and Rifles. " Messrs Robjohns' lorry containing a huge ale bottle which swayed and nodded in a most tantalising manner. Anothef lorn* belonging to the same firm bore a pyramid of beer barrels.
Next followed the N.Y Fire Brigade in uniform with engine in full steam, hose reels, t vc.
Mr Moody, Chimney Sweep, followed in his trap, which was fixed to represent a fire-grate and chimney being vigorously swept by a gentleman bearing unmistakeable evidence of his profission upon hisbrow. The Port Ahuriri Drum and Fife Band. The little fellows played exeeatlv, and looked trim and smart in their naval uniform.
The orphans from the Children's Home in a life boat.
Messrs Niven and Co.'s working representatives of the shaft at a coal pit, showing'the miners descending and ascending in the cage. The model evoked considerable enthusiasm.
The Highland Society's representation of Cottage Home Lite in ScotIrnd. A snug looking thatched cottage, a glimpse into which discovered Mesdames Nicholson and Blaekmore spinning and carding. Outside were grouped Highlanders in full costume. The bagpipes were played by Messis Cameron and Mc-Rae.
Next came a model of a full-rigged ship "The Brunner Relief " —length of keel 20 feet and 3o feet over all. Captain Tonkin was in command. The crew seemed to be well looked after by a little black cook, who was frantically peeling potatoes—enough to last a seige. The Loyal United Friends, carrying banner. The Druids in regalia. The Dark-Town Fire Brigade—a grotesque caricature of a l ire Manual surmounted by a drunken raven, which reeled awl toppled in a most unseemly manner—drawn by an attenuated donkey, who was assisted in his efforts by a dusky fireman, the bosom of whose pants had, to judge by the much needed repairs, seen better davs. The Ci i'.vi-l. Swan's Brewery was represented by two clowns in barrels, who belabored each other their heart's content. The divers in full costume. The Choral and Floral Society, consisting of some fifty girls arranged in tiers dressed in picturesque dresses, and covered with flowers.
The procession, ended witn a most effective tableau by the Junior Club, representing the aims of that institution—science, music, literature, sociability. morality, and physical culture. The sports created great enthusiasm, especially the ladies' bicycle-race.'' The whole turn out was a credit to Napier, and the widows and orphans at Brunnner will no doubt have reason to bless the promoters of the carnival for a handsome addition to the fund.
