SPORTING.

The following anent the race for the Wairoa District Handicap, won by the Wairoa horse Claude, with the Gieborne mare Bowsprit second, appears in the Wairoa Guardian of the 11th instant:—

•' Rangipai went to the front at the first go off, Claude being second, with Bowsprit next; coming round the turn Claude went to the front and won easily, Bowsprit aparently being unable to run anything like so we]l as on the previous day. Complaints were then made to the stewards by the backers of Bowsprit, that she hat not run out the race, and that her jockey, Williams, had dropped his whip. A meeting of the stewards was accordingly hold to consider the matter. The jockey, Williams, was examined, and stated that he had ridden to win to the best of his judgment, and bad dropped hie whip by accident, after which he had hit the mare with his hand to try to force her along. He admitted that he had dropped bis whip on previous occasions. Comment was made at the jockey not having the usual holder round his wrist, which would have prevented him losing his whip. The owner, Mr J. Thompson, jun., was also examined, and stated that he had instructed the jockey to run for the money, and win the race if he could. It was unanimously resolved by the stewards: * That the jockey, Williams, be cautioned that he has laid himself open to suspicion by dropping bis whip, and that a repetition of the offence will probably be dealt with severely, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Metropolitan Club.’ ”
