London, December 16. Mrs FitzGecrge, wife of the Dake of Cambridge, is dying. The Pall Mall Gazette states that the Arch bishop of Canterbury will not consecrate Canon Smith as Bishop of Sydney, on ths grounds that his election is irregular. Canon Smith fears that it will be necessary to reelect him, owing to Bisbop Kenon, of Adelaide, persisting in his protest. Mr Gladstone writes stating that circumstances will prevent his initiating an Eight Hoars Bill in Parliament, bat he promises to give any such measure his unbiassed attention. Lord Churchill considers that the ideal system o! labor would be to diminish ths numner of unemployed, and maks batter provision far the comfort of the masses, eompen. sating employers for any last incurred, America, he considers, would be certain to imitate each an example. He fears, however, competition of cheap European labor, and it would ba essential that foreign paupers should be excluded.
Hanlan has challenged any man in the world to row a match with him on the Thames for the championship, the title to which is uncertain owing to the death of Searle.
