render every assistance in this direction. I should therefore strenuously support Sir George Grey’s Land for Settlement Bill, by which the Government of the day is enabled to purchase estates under certain conditions for the settlement of the people either individually or in association, and to render them assistance, while becoming self-supporting. The system proposed by Sir George Grey, by which Government Bonds and Debentures should be issued for this purpose, is, I believe, both sound and practicable, and would go far to establish the principle of utilising the public credit for the public welfare. POLITICAL PARTIES. As political parties have since the Coalition between Sir Robert Stout and Sir Julius Vogel, been thrown into confusion, I should if elected, not pledge myself unreservedly to any party in the- House. Now that the borrowing fever has subsided, there is hope that a party may arise which has for its object not the attainment of power, but the welfare and prosperity of the Colony and its people. Meanwhile, I should advocate and support an economic and wise administration, and the carrying out of those measures which I have before indicated. I am, Yours faithfully, W. L. REES.
