Be just and fear not Let all the ends thou aim’d; at be thy country’s, Thy God's, and truth’s.
Once more we hail with joy that bright day to which all Christendom has learned to look forward with an universal feeling of delight. Christmas Day, iBBS I How soon those last twelve months seem to have sped, and still Time fleets on in its changeless course. It is usual to indulge in much sentiment on the occasion of which we now write, but there is a great practical lesson conveyed by the commemoration which has a wide and blessed influence—-a day of peace and good-
will to all men. Unfortunately, to look at the subject in its most practical light, the lesson is not so lasting as could be wished, but much good is attained, many old sores healed, and a general feeling of charity created, for which there is every reason to be greatly thankful. It is looked upon as a season of festivity, which should be participated in by all, rich and poor alike. Happily in this young country, though much affected by the prevailing depression, there are few cases of genuine distress to be found, and though the climate and all other conditions are opposed to the festivities of the season being entered into with that zest which is characteristic of the Old Land, the season should be as fully enjoyed in the colonies as it is possible to do in the Home country. The great fault, indeed, is that colonials attempt to follow too closely the customs that predominate in the old country, where the atmospheric conditions are so different at this period of the year, or at any period so far as that is concerned. It is a peculiar thing that while in most other things the colonials will soon break free from the restraints that would be placed on them in the old country one custom with regard to Christmas is adhered to as closely as possible—heavy dinners. Well we suppose it is a matter for thankfulness that so many have these things to enjoy them, and we wish all our readers A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
