LORD SALISBUBY DEFENDING HIS POLICY. RESULT OE A LATE BATTLE. London, Dec. 22. In the course of a speech at Scarborough yesterday, Lord Salisbury said the Government were bound by Mr Gladstone’s promise to the Khedive to maintain the Red Sea forte. The Government, therefore, were not prepared to abandon the Soudan, Sr akin, Dec. 22. Ten of the allies were killed and eighty wounded in the battle on Thursday morning. Large quantities of the enemy’s ammunition were captured.
