COUNTY COUNCIL!.

The above Council met yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs Clark (Chairman), Coleman, Tuohy, King, Gray, Wethered, Stubbs, Orr, and Murphy. Mr Bonifield applied for permission to place a gate on the Waikohu road.—A reply to be sent that the Council had no power to grant sugh a request. Mr W® lorice, Te Aroha, wrote offering to -bridge across a creek leading to on the Council granting £3O of the work.—Cr King considered that the Conncil should assist in the matter; Mr Morice was a large ratepayer, and was greatly inconvenienced in bringing the wool to town.—The Chairman said it was

a very hard case, but if they initiated the Sractice of allowing grants to one individual 1 an outlying district others would be making similar applications.—Cr Tuohy thought the settlers in the locality referred to should form into a Road Board; the Council could not expend money in the way asked.—A motion by Cr King, seconded by Cr Stubbs, that the work be done under the sepervision of the Engineer, was carried, an amendment to the oontrary, proposed by Cr Tuohy, seconded by Cr Mnrpby, being lost. Constable Byan, Tologa Bay, wrote stating his willingness to accept the position of Clerk to the Licensing Court.—Received. The Surveyor-General wrote, stating that the Government intended to entrust to the Council the sum of £l6O, towards the expenditure of the rate on the Waiapu Inland road, and also that the balance of the vote of £l5O is proposed to be expended upon the formation of the three miles of the OrmondWaiapu Road, between the end of the present formation and the junction with the Arikihi road.—Received. The Surveyor-General wrote stating that the sum of £650 had now been placed at the disposal of the Council, for expenditure upon the Mangatu Road to the oilsprings Received. The Clerk of the Wairoa County Council wrote, in reply to a telegram received from the Council, stating that they had communicated with the Government with reference to laying off the road between Poverty Bay and the Mahia.— Received. tenders. The following tenders were received: — Waimata-Ormond Road—R. Knox, £134 101 j P. MoDoughlin, £143: Jones and O'Donnell, £ll5 (accepted). Mangatu Road—P. McLoughlin, £167 ; R. Knox, £145 10s (accepted). Waikohu Road—P. McLoughlin, £111; O’Dwyer. £lBll7s Od; R. Knox, £lO9 10s (accepted). Pakarai— R. Knox, £217 Ils 6d (accepted); P, McLoughlin, £241; Doleman and Hicks, £287 10s (A. J. O'Neill, £405 ; J. Mclntosh, £266. Metal—Jones and O'Donnell, 8s lid per yard (accepted); Gallagher and Atkin, 9s Sd: Brownlow and Co., 10s 6d; R. Knox, IQs Bd. REPORT or LOAN COMMITTEE. The Committee recommended that the following works be approved by the Council •nd submitted to the ratepayers :—Waikohu Riding: Bridge over Waikohu river, £2000; GHsborns Riding: Tramway from Barker's quarry to depot at Cemetery, £4000; Te Aral Riding: Metalling from Price’s to Craill’l Md Wairt* Road, £l6OOl Whaltapbkt

Riding: Completing Wainui road to beach, £5OO ; total, £BOOO. The Committee had met a Committee of the Borough C' uucil, who had approved of the tramway scheme, and would recommend its adoption by their Council. The Borough would require about 2500 yards of stone per annum delivered at Cemetery depot at 8s per yard, or less if working expenses warrant a leaser charge. The interest, etc., would amount to 2s per yard, which wi h quarrying Is 2d, breaking 3s 6d, and haulage Is per yard, would make an aggregate of 7s 8d per yard. After considerable discussion the majority of the Council decided against prosecuting the project any further. The Council decided to grant the Waikohu and the Te Arai Road Boards £BO and £l4O respectively, upon condition that they do not collect any rates for the year 1888. On the motion of Cr Tuohy it was ageed to call tenders for metalling the Gisborne Wairoa Road. The cost not to exceed £7O.

It was decided that tenders be called for 1 all the extra work required in the Engineer’s department. ‘ Messrs Coleman and Stubbs were rs-elected 5 Hospital Trustees. RANGER AND DOG TAX COLLECTOR. The following applications were received for the position of ranger only : —J Chute £7O, W Johnson £lOO, A Gillies £6O, J Brown £9O, D O’Connell £BO, A Pritchard £lOO, C Anderson £72, J Linklater £75, W Bryce £65, R Howarth £B4 10s, J Hurrey £7O, T Curtis £66 10s. For the conjoined position of Ranger and Dog Tax Collector, the following applications were received:—Hills and Nelson, No. 1 district £lB4, No. 2 £BO, ranger £45; R Thelwall, No. 1 district £l70 t No. 2 £9O, ranger £6O ; J Mullane, No. 1 £34; J Brown, No. 1 £lOO ; C Anderson, No. 1 £l5O ; R Thelwall, No. 1 £170; W Ferguson, £237 (two districts). Informal—J Mclntosh, No. 1 £175. The tender of Messrs Hills and Nelson was accepted, on condidition that the tenderers undertake the duties of Ranger and Dog Tax Collector separately.

The Ranger made a general report on the number of cattle, eto., impounded during the last three weeks.
