BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, Cra Townley. Dunlop, Taylor, Harding, Joyce, Lewis, Coleman, Whinray, PUPPLY OF STONE. The County Council wrote as follows "This Council has appointed a Commiftt® to wait upon your Council to ascertain what quantity of broken metal you would be willing to fake from a depot near the cemetery, at Makaraka. and the maximum priep you could pay for Ruch metal. It is proposed to obtain a rum of mnnpy under the Government Loans to Tiocal Bodies Act for the purpose of erecting a tramway from Barker’s quarry to Makaraka. crossing the Taruheru river by a bridge, and if the annual supplies for two Councils justify the outlay upnn a tram wav, then the schema may be adopted to the joint requirements of the Council*. Tf your Connoil will appoint a day for meeting prior tn 21st December, or upon that date at 11 a.m. it will suit the Committee.”

Cr Coleman said this letter was partly the outcome of proposals made bv the Borough Council to the County Council. There was a proposal before the County Council to borrow money under the Loan* to Local Bodies Act, and if the joint Committees could decide upon a reasonable scheme no doubt it could be done. Of course the scheme wouldhave to obtain the sanction nf the ratepayers and it would take some time to carry out. He did not think it wnuld be available fnr this eeasnn. He moved that the Public Works Committee meet a Committee of the County Council for the purpose of seeing what could be done in the matter.

Cr Jovcp thought the Councils should meet and discuss the matter.

Cr Coleman’s motion wrr carried, the Committees to meet on December 21 at eleven o’clock.

The Hnrhnr Board wrote regretting that it. wa* unable »o surnly the Council with anv mnre stone from Haiti, hut if rnugh shingle was of any use it could be had on the same terms as before. SHINGLE. A letter was receivpd frnm Mr R. Knox offpting the Council 100 yard* Haiti shingle. Iving near the Turanganui bridge, at 3s per yard, a r The offer was accepted, FIRE ENGINE. Mr Smaill, engineer of the Fire Brigade, reported

" I have to report on the fire engine. The boiler has been re-tubed and put in good working order. The Government Inspector has examined the boiler and owing to s'gns of decay in the nhell has reduced the wo’king piessure to 1251b* per square inch. This is, however, ample for all requirements. The

engine would be much more serviceable if the suction was arranged so as not to be disturbed except when ihe engine left the shed. 1 would advise that this should be done without delay.” Cr Townley said the cost would be about £5 10* to substitute an iron auction pipe for the rubber one now in use. The work was authorised. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Mr Wilkinson, Road Overseer, was granted one week’s leave of absence. inspector’s report. Mr Faram reported :— Females’ bathing shed : This is finished and is greatly used. lam directed hy those who assisted in its erection to hand it over to your Council and thank you for your generosity. Fires: I have to report a fire in Lowe street this morning.

Mr Joyce proposed that a visitor’s book be provided for the bathing shed, in order that the Council could see if the shed were patronised.—Cr Harding seconded. The motion was negatived, members not seeing that the book would be any guide to show the attendance. ROAD overseer’s REPORT. The Road Overseer reported as follows :— " Grey street: During th* last fortnight I have had the newly metalled nortion of Grey street blinded, at a cnst of £3 7« 6d. Footbridge: A lower rail has been put. on hnth sides of the footbridge, the cost being £2 12*. The above work was ordered by your Council. Childers Road Bridge : The approaches to the bridge on Childers road were Retting very narrow, and had to be repaired last week. Having the timber on hand this work only cost £2. Watering cart: On the 3rd inst. the axle and three scroll irons of the watering cart broke. The cart was at once taken to be repaired. I consider the axle and wheels altogether too light for the work, and should not be surprised at them breaking again anv day. Cook street: There are about six chains of footpath in different parts of thi* street where the sand is very light, and ought to be covered with beach shingle. I would recommend the work to be done as it will only cost about £4 10s. Carting for the month 17* 9d (including shingle for Grey street). Day labor, £4 Us 10|d as per vouchers.” It was decided not to make the alterations to the watering cart, as the cost would be too great. It was agreed that the Overseer’a recommendation with regard to Cook street should be carried out* dog collars. The following tender* were reoeived for the supply of 250 dng cnllari W. Morgan, £H 6*; Adeane and Primroie. £fl9si M. Hall. £6 15s.

Messrs Adeane and Primrose’s tender, being the lowest, was accepted.
