HARBOR BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the above was held on Tuesday eve ling. Present: The Chairmin, and Messrs Chambers, Townley, Murphy, Clark, Matthewson, and Dickson. Messrs Cuff and Graham, of Lyttelton, wrote recommending a certain class of dredge to the consideration of the Board.—The letter was acknowledged, no dredge being required. CEMENT. Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett wrote : — “ We are instructed to offer about 84 tons cement, by the Lochnagar, to arrive here in about a fortnight, at 14s 3d per cask, on wharf, but in bond. As th? vessel is about to leave, this off -roan nnlv be open for 24 hours.” The Public Works Committee recommended, provided the Engineer was satisfied with the brand, that the offer be accepted. The Engineer had enquired, and expressed his satisfaction, and the offer wai accepted. The Board confirmed the Committee’s decision. harbormaster’s report. Captain Bennett reported that the Rosina had carried away the chain of the b:a<*k bu »y, which he had replaced temporarily, Mr Johnston having promised to restore the original buoy. It was agreed that the Engineer communicate with the Government Engineer with reward to the rails and if he deemed the offer satisfactory to accept it. It was decided to communicate with the Borough Council with regard to shingle, offering it to them at the previous price. The Chairman proposed that tenders be called for the supply of totara for twelve months a quantity of about 30,000 feet. Mr Chambers seconded.

Mr Dickson thought that would be going ahead of the times. Would it not ba better to let the whole job in one contract ? Mr Chambers said Mr Dickson was raising a side issue. Mr Dickson said it was a question which would be the cheapest to the latepayers. The Chairman saiu that Mr Dicksan’s objection really amounted to an amendment that such tenders be not called for, Mr Dickson thought it was bad for the members then sitting to make a hard and fast contract for twelve months. Mr Matthewson said the contractor could always make better terms than the Board. Mr Dickson moved that the present members do not enter into such a contract. The Chairman said that would be a direct negative. The motion was carried, Messrs Dickson and Matthewson being against. It was agreed that the ladders be procured, PAYMENTS.
