THE BRYCE-GORDON TROUBLE.
A sore matter which has just been revived, because of the suitability of the time, is the Bryce-Rusden affair, in which Sit Arthur Gordon took so degrading a part Mr Bryce has vindicated his character in the law couits, but instead of Sir Arthur Gordon being punished for the dishonest conduct of which he has been guilty, he has not only made no retraction but has been promoted by the Imperial Government to the high post of Governor of Ceylon. In the trial in London, which resulted in Mr Bryce obtaining a verdict against Mr Rusden, it was stated that the information was derived from what had been supplied the author by Sir Arthur Gordon. In reply to Mr Bryce Lord Knutsford expressed pleasure that he had cleared his character, but considered there was no necessity for him to interfere in the matter. Every colonist must be indignant at having one ’ of the public representatives accused as a murderer by the person appointed by the Colonial Office, yet for that Office to take no action whatever in the matter, except to promote the slanderer, gives rise to an impression that they justified his action. The present is a most opportune time to bring the matter forward, and in the interest of all that is honorable there should be joint colonial action in enforcing the matter on the attention of the Imperial Government.
