Thb usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough ouncil was held on Tuesday evening, there being present: The Mayor, and Crs Townley, Lewis, Lucas, Hardingj Joyce, Taylor, Coinman, and Whinray. Mr Taylor, having taken the statutory .1 - claration, took his seat. INCOMING CORRESPONDENCE.
From the Audit Department, informing thp Council that Mr Stevenson had been appoin'e l to audit th&ir accounts. From the Under-Secretary forward' h. copy of a Bill to amend the Public Works Aot, which is to be introduced into Parliament next session, and asking the Council to forward anv objections they might have. -The Bill was ’aid on the table. From W. Adair, drawing the Council’. attention to the state of Custom House B’reft, there being fully six inches of dust on the
road owing to all the traffic being at present on that street.—Cr Whinray said that unless that street was closed, the traffic would never go on Read’s Quay in its present state The only thing the Council could do would be to have Read’s Quay blinded with beach shingle He would move to that effect.—Cr Lucas seconded the motioif, but thought that only the Crown of the road should be shingled.— The motion was then put and carried.—Or Whinray said it was also necessary to take steps to stop all traffic on Custom House Street, so as to enable the metal to be worked
down.—The Chairman explained that the Council could only close the road on account of repairs. The matter then dropped. From R. O. Hammerton, Public Trus’e*, informing the Council that the interest dmunder the £lO 000 loan from the Harbor Board, should in future be paid to him, as the bonds were now vested in the Public Trustee.
The Sinking Fund Commissioners of the Harbor Board also wrote, stati g thaf the half year’s interest, £3OO, on the £lO.OOO loan was now due—Cr Lewis wanted to kn w ' p hat the Public Trustee had to do with 'he matter.—Cr Townley : He has jus - got oharye of Gisborne now.—Cr Lewis thought the amount should be paid to ’he Sinking Fund Commissioners.—Cr Tnwnley said thn most advisable course would be to pay the Pubh<Trustee, as he now held all the Sinking Fund Commission securities. He would move accordingly.—Cr Lucas having seconded the proposition, it was carried, PETITION, Cr Townley said he had a petition to pre* sent, but he had been forestalled, as the re quest had already been granted—that was with reference to shingling Read’s Quay. PAYMENTS.
ROAD OVERSEER’S REPORT Gravel contract: The Harbor Board have finished with the crane, and Mr McLeod has commenced delivering gravel. Mr Knox will start carting it into Grev street to-morrow. This work wi’l be finished in a few davs.— Fixing gas engine, etc.: The contractor for fixing the gas engine, etc., is pushing on the work. Everything ig now on the ground ; the tanks, stand, and all necessary fixings outside are finished. The gag engine has been fixed and put in good working order, and the pump* will be finished to-morrow morning. Everything will be ready for a trial test on Thursday morning. A progress pavment nf £4O is asked for. I would recommend your Council to have the gas engine boxed in and a flnor made to prevent it from being splashed with salt water from the fire engine. This will require to be done to keep it clean, and protect it from the dust. I have purchased a horgn and harness for £30.-1 would ask your Council to (jecide whether the stable should be tendered for or built by day labor. The report was adopted.
inspector’s report. I would respectfully ask your Council to assist in providing a swimming bath for the girls attending the Government School, for the following reasons 95 per cent of the boys above seven years of age can swim while only 5 per cent of the girls can. The boys have a bath, and on a hot day Mr Morgan vends the whole of them, under the charge of a teacher, for a swim, while the girls have to. stay in school. Boys and girls living at a distance bring their dinner, and I have counted 100 boys in the water within ten minutes aft-r the bell rings. The girls during this time have to play about the playground. For the past two years there has been no sickness among the boys, but not so among the girls, and Mr Morgan believes that 'he healthiness of the boys is mainly due to the facilities they have for bathing If your CounlHl will favorably consider the matter at your next meeting I will submit plans and estimates. lam glad to be able to inform your Council that the Fire Brigade have acted 071 your advice respecting sending a team to Invercargill to rep esent your borough and will go into active training on the first of next month.
Or Whinray though' the Council should take into consideration the question nf hathing, but as there were no details i 0 g o upon it should be left over till next meeting, for Mr Faram to report on the cost, &c. »t C S,'! oyce e ° n si d <”’e d it one of the duties of the School Committee. . Or Lucas said the parties concerned should initiate the matter, and not bring it before the Council. The matter then dropped. MISCELLANEOUS. On the motion of Or Lucas, Mr J. Drummond was appointed Borough Valuer. Or Coleman was appointed a member of the Finance Committee, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of M»* Morgan. It was decided to sue for all rates remaining unpaid on the 30th November.
