A curious little bill was published in the New York Herald of July 12, to show how the high tariff worked. A. book published in England, and sold there at 2s, which, within a fraction, equals 5Qc in United States money, was sent gratis by the publishers to the editor of the New York Herald ; probably for review. The book was, comparing great things with small, something like the gift of a white elephant. First, the editor had to pay Idol 59c ; or 6a 3c, for the tariff duty on the book; next, Idol 50s, or another 6s 3d, for brokerage on the 2a book ; and for Custom-house fees, 20c; and postage, with sundries, 51—or a gross total of 3dol 71c, or 15s-SJd, English money, before he could obtain possession of this book, the gift ol tha English publishers,
