The charge of assault, Murray v Searle, was withdrawn by leave of the eourt yesterday morning, the defendant paying five shillings cost of summons. The s.s. Taupo having been detained, does not leave Dunedin until Friday, Oamaru on Saturday, and Timaru on Monday, arriving hare on the following Thursday, 18th inst. During the voyage of the Mararoa from Auckland to Sydney the vessel was struck by a heavy se i, whsch swept a lady passenger and her child overboard. Several other persons, who were struck by the sea, were seriously injured. The Australia leaves for Napier at 7 this evening, and the Manapouri proceeds on to Melbourne via southern ports at the same hour on Friday. It is only a short time since thia firm started business in Gisborne, but they have already established a good reputation, and the material just received is pronounced to ha of exceptional quality. Resolved that the Board return thanks to Mr Tallis of Waipiro, for tha «nhscription list end cheque for £l5 16s 6d. Accounts totalling £lii 6s 2d were passed for payment. Messrs A. Brown and Stubbs were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
The attention of the authorities is directed to a weak point in the Taruheru footbridge. A great many children are continually passing over the bridge on their way to and from school, and therefore everv precaution is necessary for their safety. The railing la not sufficiently secure, the space between the lower rail and the platform being wide enough to ■How young children *o fall through ; indeed there have been several narrow escapes. Ths expenditure of a few shillings would render unnecessary any cause for complaint, One resident was in ths habit of leaving his boat unlocked near the bridge. so that it might be made use of in ease of accident, but owing to the mischievousness or spite ot some unknown person, thia thoughtful practice had to be discontinued.
