STREET WATERING.
Is a dusty town like Gisborne street watering is a question of much interest to the residents, and the scheme propounded at the last meeting of the Borough Council is welt worthy of notice. Indeed a scheme by which jt is believed the ratepayers dan bs saved over £6O in six months would ba welcomed at any time, and more especially so at the present. The schema is a very simple one, and ratepayers can easily judge for themselves that by a little extra outlay at the beginning an efficient system of street watering can be obiained at a great reduction on the cost of the previous year. We cannot fully endorse tha Committee’s report as to the amount of the saving is likely to be made, but it is apparent there will be a greet saving, and that is quite sufficient to bring our views into barmony. In the estimate for instance, the hire of engine and cost of gas are set down at £6 ss. To this a certain sum would most likely hava to ba added for keeping the angina in order. If the Council can purchase a good horse and harness for £3O they will have made an exceptional bargain, and it is doubtful whether £4 a month will be sufficient to keep a draught horse in constant work. Than of course the ordinary risks must also be accepted. However on fully considering the whole scheme we think it a highly commandable cps, and to the carrying out of which no possible objection can be taken.
