THE CHINESE QUESTION.
REJECTION OF AMERICAN TREATY. BRITISH INFLUENCE. SALISBURY PLEASED AT REJECTION. THE TIMES’ OPINION. London, Sept 3. The rejection by China of the American Chinese Treaty is ascribed to British influence, and the insertion by the United States Senate of the clauses preventing the return of celestials who wished to revisit China. New York, Sept 3. An opinion is generally expressed that the Marquis of Salisbury is pleased at the rejection of the American Chinese Treaty, as the Colonial Governments will now have to rely on themselves ; while if the treaty had been accepted. Imperial parleying with China would have been endless and fruitless. The Times considers the agitation acainst Chinese in Australia is merely a political trick. Mr Randolph Want, solicitor for New South Wales in London, is forwarding proposals of Quong Tart regarding Chinese question to the Chinese Ambassador. NO OFFICIAL INTIMATION RECEIVED. Washington, Sept 4. Mr Bayard, Secretary of State, has not yet been officially informed of the rejection of the Chinese Treaty.
