A SCANDALOUS BANKRUPTCY.
One of the most wretched examples that has come under our notice of the scandalous abuse which may be made of the bankruptcy laws, is that in the case of Lange, who was examined yesterday afternoon before the Assignee. Here is a single man, in health and strength and in the most promising years of his life, attempting to go through the Bankruptcy Court because judgment had been secured against him for a small sum, and that debt had only been pressed for on account of Lange’s impudence. Otherwise none of the creditors had become importunate, and the whole amount of the debts only came to about £35. The bankrupt endeavors to account for his disgraceful position by shuffling the blame on to a former mate, but on examination it was provpd that the mate was not liable to a third of the amount, which might almost have been cleared by the costs incurred in becoming bankrupt. The whole affair is monstrous, and it is gratifying to note that the creditors are determined to take a firm stand. It is absolutely painful to see a young man like Lange taking advantage of such a refuge, and if he is honest he will do his best to pay off the just debts of his creditors. If he refuses to make such an effort, the creditors will themselves be guilty of more than a weakness if they facilitate his discharge.
