MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.
The burgesses have no reason to be dissatisfied with the quality of the candidates who have been nominated to contest the seats which will shortly he rendered vacant in the Borough Council. The three retiring candidateshave been re-nominated, and at least one of the other candidates has fully proved his fitness for any local governing position to which he may be elected. The other candidate, Mr Taylor, though he has not, so far as we know, given any practical proof of his suitability for a seat in the Borough Council, has the credit of being a thoughtful citizen who has Inn? resided in Gisborne. Public attention is at present so much engros ed with other subjects, that it is to be feared the ratepayers will not give the approaching Borough Council election the consideration to which it is entitled. There is no great question before the Council to direct particular attention to its discharge of the public business. But this should in no wise enuse the ratepayers to become neglectful of their duty, for it is just at such a time that the general prospect of affairs can be coolly considered, and the best possible results ensured. At the present, above all other periods, public business of every kind tequires to be placed in the hands of those in whom there is every confidence. There are, we are aware, many good men in the Borough who would make worthy Councillors if they chose to sefk election, but as matters stand the ratepayers have in the field a very fair number to select from. When the right time comes we shall do what we consider our own duty in such a case, and recommend the three candidates whom we consider the most suitable for the position to which they aspire. With regard to the two new candidates there is an uncertainty as to the views they advocate, as there h»s yet been no opportunity for them to explain the lines which they adopt.
