Sporting Notes.
Owners of brood mares will n t have any reason to complain this season of there being no first class stallion in the district, as a couple of well-known sporting men have, in a spirit of enterprise, imported one of Musket’s famous progeny, the stallion Derringer, out of one of the best mares. The horse is a picture to look upon, his symmetry of proportion, splendid carriage, and undeniable pedigree speaking volumes in his favor. The owners are to be congratulated on their enterprise, and they are deserving of that success of which there is little doubt will meet them. If our horsey men went in more than they do for breeding first-class animals we would have much more reason to be proud of the generality of our stock than we have to-day. In addition to the above our sporting contributor sends the following :—ln all probability a more handsome entire for stud puiposes was never secured for Poverty Bay than Mr H Patterson’s six year old by Musket ; dam Rosalie, christened “ Derringer”. Standing fifteen three, the horse looks like a pony, being so small and symetrically built, but on closer inspection the “ little horse” as he is termed, becomes almost a giant. The old saying “ Handsome is as handsome does” is verified and clearly shown both by the ” pocket pistols,” performances and his appearance. In a fnture issue when reveiwing the sires of the season, the pedigree of both the horse in question and the dam, together with their performances, will be made more public. The Napier Park Racing Club’s next meeting takes place on the 10th October, when £5OO in stakes will be given. The H. B. Town and Suburban Club hold their Spring meeting at Napier Park, on October 3. The events on the Programme are: Hurdles, £3O ; Maiden, £25 ; Pony, £l5 ; Handicap, £4O ; Selling, £2O ; Purse, £25; and Flying. £25. The total amount given away is £lBO. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, the wellknown totalisator t p r oprietors of Christchurch, during the season put the large . sum of £128,337 through their machines without a mistake. For the V. R. C. Champion Stakes of 1000 sovs, second horse 200 sovs and third 100 Bovs, to be run at Flemington in the Autumn, three miles. 61 horses have entered, and include the New Zealanders Tranter, Enfilade, Whakawai, Thunderbolt, Silver Prince, Pearl Shell, Chainshot, Carbine, Cuirassier, Gipsy King, and Maxim. The most succe-sful Napier horses during the past season were : Chemist and Silence, £7-94; Uranus, £589; Warama. £447; Whisper, £432 ; Waterfall, £290 ; Meta, 263; Premium £257 ; Miss Dargon, £242 The 9 horses mentioned won a total of £4079, an ave age of £453 Brothers to Richmond. Sultan, Crutchfield, and Exchange, and sisters to Whakawai, Galatea, and Lorraine, are engaged in the C J C. Welcome St«kes. “Gipsy King” says it is a mystery why Kangaroo is always allowed to pay such big dividends. His party must be a bit on the cocktail side. At the Meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club, Mr Redwood proposed that Mr L Redwood be elected starter. He was well qualified for the position ; and besides, he (MrC. Redwood) would like to see the young men coming forward and taking an interest in the Club. Mr Gentry said he had no objection to the nominee, but that having a Redwood starter, a Redwood secretary, and a Bedwood filling other responsible positions, would give the public an idea that the club was run by Re iwoods. Lochiel, Artillery, Springston, St Clair, and Carbine hold pride of place in the betting market on the N.Z. Cup, and the last named is favorite for the C. J-C. Derby. Mr Stead has received an offer for Lochiel from America. He only asks £6OO, and as the States buyers mean business, having already secured Sir Modred and Darebin, there is some probability of the handsome son of Prince Charlie leaving us. A Southern writer states :—I do not think he will start in the big race, and if he did I do not think he could repeat his performance of last year. Artillery, who is an equal favorite wish Lochiel at 100 to 15, is said to be but Mr Butler says the horse is allright. Although the black put down Nelson in the Canterbury Cup, 2| miles, w.f.a., I do not think he will fill a] place, and would be much surprised to see the bearer of the popular though unlucky green and white hoops win the N.Z. Cup of ISBB. Springeton, winner of the C J.C. Great Autum Handicap, and Carbine, the unbeaten 2-year-old, I consider at present the best double. A London correspondent write* : —I had no idea until a few days back that Benzon, the Jubilee plunger, was as well known in New Zealand as in Australia, or I should have told you more about him. There are always yarns enough current. Just at present, for instance, he is in fine feather. His winnings over Minting and Ayrshire were somewhat depleted by Crowberry’s defeat at Paris, but whilst in the French capital * the Jubilee ’ broke the bank and completely cleaned out the habitues of a gambling club, walking home one morning, with £16,000 in his pockets. This exploit, was followed by a lucky Ascot week, Mr Fry alone losing upwards of £20,000 to him. Benzon dearly loves to be talked about, and consequently affects the eccentric. One of his vagaries is never to wear a shirt twice. Duclos, of Bond street, sends him home fourteen shirts every Saturday—one for morning, one for evening dress for every day of the week. These he wears once and then casts away, his valet no doubt selling them back to Duclos. The other day a lady insisted on paying Benzon a £lO b‘ t she had lost to him. He took it at last, but sent her jewellery subsequently worth £9OO.
