A Melbourne girl, aged 14, recently attempted to commit suicide because of her stepfather’s cruelty. The girl’s mother, who gave her name as Mrs Kelly, said that if her daughter were discharged spg tfQiild look after her, but she displayed a heartless nont'udancs in court, and the bench said her bearing was most unnatural and unmotheriy. The defendant was evidently ashamed of her oily, and tearfully assured the magistrates that she would not offend again, She was then discharged with a caution.
