Concert at Patuahi.
The concert and dance held at Patutahi on Thursday night passed off very successfully. The concert was opened with an instrumental duet by Mrs Gentle and Miss Judd, which wa fairly successful. Mr Goldsmith then sang “General Gordon” in grand style. “Maid of Athens” was delivered by Mr Edwards in his usual powerful tenor, while a reading by Mr McClintock was received with roars of laughter. “ Fading Away,” by Miss Parnell,' was sung with much expression, as was also " A Dream within a Dream,” by Miss Clark, who responded to a well-deserved encore. The instrumental trio “ Home, Sweet Home,” by Messrs Ormond, Davies, and Parnell, had evidently received a deal of practice. A vocal duet, “ Very Improper Indeed,” rendered by Mr and Miss McFarlane, was loudly applauded, and a repetition was demanded. Mt J. S. Stewart favored the audience with two violin solos. Miss Lunn gave "The Bridge” very nicely, but as the music was set rather low, her voice was not heard to its best advantage. Mr A. Reed was popular in bis song “ The Midshipmite,” and responded to an encore. It is needless to comment on Mr Edwards’ rendition of “ Alice, where art thou ?” as his vocal powers are so well known. Miss Parnell followed with “ Constance,” and was extremely successful. After another reading by Mr McClintock, the programme was concluded by the National Anthem. Mr Parnell gave very acceptable assistance in rendering the accompaniments to the vocalists. After the ball was cleared oqt, dancing was commenced, and kept up until the small hours, Mr Stewart supplying music on the violin, assisted by Mr Ormond at the piano. The Committee worked hard to make the affair a success, and were rewarded with a crowded house.
