SPORTING NEWS.

BOXING DAY BAOES,

The f allowing weight, ha-e been declared for the Boxing Day meeting-

NOTES FROM OTfR SPORTING OON. TBIBUTOR.

Tnnros have been dull until lately, but, now the handieupa have been made known, more interest ia taken in sporting circle*. As to the handicapping a great deal of exception has been taken, and in' my op nion, not unjustly. Fitz-James heads the list with a steadier of 9st, but his stable companion equally, if not better bred, Nora, receives 71bs Penguin may be an excellent hack, but with Bst 31bs on his back, and the distance taken into consideration, I doubt his ability to finish anywhere but amongst the ruck. Audacity has cause to grumble at having to leave the paddock with 7lbs more weight than the highly bred New Zealand wonder Langwaist. Perhaps of the bunch Nina has been most unkindly treated. This mare, without any reason for such a dictum, is allotted 7st 7ibs. On what grounds the handicapper allotted this impost is one of those things “ no fellah can understand.” The balance are fairly treated, although the son of Foul Play, Cairngorm, should be very prominent with 6st sibs on his back. In the hurdles Nina again is called upon to run at even weights with Duadine which appears on the face of it somewhat peculiar. Nancy witb 2lbs short of the top weights has met with a little more than her deserts. Off Colour and Levuka have no cause of complaint. Audacity, in the Flying Handicap, improperly heads the list, but for what reason I know not. The records of Fits-James should certainly have placed him higher in the handicapper’s estimation. A stone se parates Pouawa from the last mentioned son of Atalanta, but even this scarcely gives the little mare a chance I'he last division have little cause for grumbling.

SATURDAY MORNING’S WORK. Longwaist was the first to put in an appearance and did a mile iu clothing. He was stripped and was sent two miles fa*t, finishing strong and well A very likely lucking hack then went at hall pace over the double mile and moved so nicely that I shall find out more about him.

Fitz-James and Nora in the very pink of condition followed and it was a perfect treat to witness the grand style in which they negotiated the two miles they w«re sent. From th« manner in which they finished little, bar an accident, can stop tnem from annexing to their owner both the Boxing Day and Flying handicaps. Nancy and Nina did two miles next, but only at three quarter pace. They both moved well and although not quite up to concert pitch yet are well forward.

Pouawa and Chiquita next went a mile fast. They were followed by Mr lL L. Sunderland's hack. This promising anima l had to be pulled “two double" to keep him slow enough, MONDAY MORNING. Long before the sleepy people of Gisborne were awake, Linnell's team might have been seen exercising at Waerenga-a-hika. Fi'z-James, Mora, and Nancy were sent two iriles at something under full speed, all showing the attention which is being bestowed on them. Pouawa and Chiquita did a mile fast, the former having all the best ol it. Nina, by herself, did two miles slow. 1 shall have a look at some of the other nags, now up, shortly and will give you some more news. Wiilow.
