The first section of the Midland Railway from Bruunerton to Kohiri Station is ready for traffic, A boarding house keeper, at Pahiatna, attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday by suffocating himself with charcoal fumes. A man named Kirk attempted suicide at Wellington on Tuesday. J. T. Rowlatt, solicitor, Otago, has been suspended for two years for irregular practices. The Mosgiel Woollen Co. have declared a dividend of eight per cent. The premises of Sainbury and Ellison, chemists, Dunedin, have been gutted by fire. The Appeal Court has decided that stamp duty on memorandum of transfer of land shall be assessed on the value of land, less encumbrances, and not on the value of the land as claimed by the Commissioner. A shocking case of neglect has been brought to light at Wellington. A child died of skin disease, and the doctor’s evidence showed that the death was caused by the parents not attending to the child and keeping him clean. Attempts have been made to rob the postal pillar boxes at Wellington.
